Paper Mario: Fan-Remake (UE4)

I thought it would be fun to remake & reimagine the starting area of 2004's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Fitting the modern stylized art style of the more recent games in the franchise.

The scene runs using a real-time lighting setup, making use of light propagation volumes to simulate Global Illumination. I did bake in additional AO, especially underneath the small pieces of paper which adds a lot of extra detail.

For the materials I used a lot of instancing. With displacement to lift random paper edges on the tiles & bricks. And a gradient for some automatic colour variation. I used vertex painting to add subtle details to some tillable textures. I made all the models & textures from scratch. Apart from the characters, which I upscaled & tweaked in Illustrator.
